Life is funny. As soon as you set your mind out to do something you really want to do, something wholly unpredictable presents itself. In my case this was a new home in a new state, a new full-time job, and a suddenly overflowing school schedule. Oh, and a social life. That last one came out of left field for sure. But I digress. What was it I wanted to do? Write more, specifically my second novel.
My debut novel is ready to go to the editor, but since I was on a roll, starting the follow-up book seemed like a good idea. But as life is apt to do, it threw in a monkey wrench in my plans in the form of adulthood and responsibility. And occasional fun. We can’t forget that.
Needless to say, I had to take a step back and come to grips with my suddenly busy life. After some heavy soul searching, I decided to take a break from school until the beginning of next year. That gives me a little over two months to focus on other things, including writing, editing, and possibly publishing. Probably won’t get all three done in two months; I am somewhat realistic. However, I plan to get something accomplished in that time frame.
So here it is: I am challenging myself to have a rough draft of my second novel completed by the time I take up my classes again. I already have some done, including my outline. I just have to put everything together. By the time I attend my first class of 2014, I will have the rough draft of “Awaiting Boaz” ready for editing, proofreading, and all that jazz.
There’s no excuse for me not to have this done. Yes, I am still busy, but I am not as busy as before. I need to take advantage of the time I have at the moment and not let anything distract me. This includes my Tuesday nights, which have turned into “hey-let’s-go-to-Kris’s-apartment-for-I-Dream-of-NeNe-and-snacks-and-conversation” nights. As much as I love bonding with my buddies, I still need to get some work done. It’s time to start grinding and get some things accomplished. Words aren’t going to write themselves, you know.
So there ya have it. I have taken a break from academics to get my writing in order, and I’m ready to work. I fully intend to make the most of this challenge come Hell or high water…or the upcoming holiday season.
